The Curriculum

Curriculum Intent

The curriculum at Rothwell Victoria is constantly developing. It seeks to give our children the experiences needed to make sense of the world. The development of curiosity, creativity and enjoyment are key to our children becoming lifelong learners. We start with the National Curriculum and then personalise it for our children. The school continually reviews and tailors the curriculum, to ensure that its design meets the needs of every student. We promote hard work and commitment and celebrate the values of co-operation, pride, resilience, organisation, perseverance, enquiry and the intrinsic value of learning. These Learning Goals are promoted in everything we do and across all aspects of our curriculum.

At Rothwell Victoria our definition of progress is; the widening and deepening of essential knowledge, skills, understanding and learning behaviours.  We design, organise and plan our curriculum to ensure that children are not merely covering content but achieving a depth to their learning which enables them to use their skills and understanding in all areas of the curriculum.

Our careful curriculum design and planning means that we build in many opportunities for repetition and practice opportunities for essential knowledge, skills and understanding in every subject. This ensures that children are able to revisit previous learning, which allows them to gradually develop a deeper understanding of the skills and processes within subjects, at their own pace and in the best possible way for each individual child.

Topics in all year groups are well-planned and include systematic child led learning activities and projects. All topics are delivered using a four phase approach:

  • Stage 1 – ‘The Hook’
  • Stage 2 – KWL grid leading to pupil lead research on a chosen ‘What I would like to know’ aspect. To be researched and presented in chosen way
  • Stage 3 – Developing Stage – where all the curriculum teaching takes place in line with subject overviews
  • Stage 4 – Innovation Stage – end of topic creative task which brings everything together

Our curriculum is designed to enhance the learning experiences of our children. We believe that grounding children in their city through place based learning raises their attainment and encourages them to be active citizens. The new Leeds Curriculum which places art and culture at the heart of place based formal learning, is used to supplement individual topics. In addition to this, children conduct local studies within the geography curriculum and link history topics with our local area.
